1PM CST

Neurodivergence, Neuroscience, and Helping Professions

Dr. Gene Dockery

Neurodivergence is often seen as and treated like a behavioral issue rather than a neurological difference as neuroscience research demonstrates. This misconception creates barriers and marginalization for neurominorities that helping professions enable and exacerbate. Shifting perspective from behavioral and deficit-based models to socio-ecological and neurodiversity paradigms is necessary to affirm and advocate for neurodivergent communities. This presentation is intended to give professionals knowledge and strategies to better understand and serve neurodivergent individuals through sharing background information on neurodiversity concepts, covering differences between models of disability, and giving voice to neurodivergent lived experience.

The Brainstorm Community is dedicated to increasing access to neuroscience-informed research and practice in the helping professions. We are committed to keeping this community and its resources, including NBCC-approved CE Credit, free, but many have expressed a desire to give back. So, we created a mechanism to accept donations. All donations will be used to further the mission of the Brainstorm Community and support research among its members. Thank you for your support, and let's keep brainstorming!
